Iran Special: A Beginner's Guide to Today's Parliamentary Elections - 1 views

  •
There are 290 seats in the Iranian Majlis, with members serving four-year terms. The chamber is officially led by a speaker. There are no political parties as such; instead, blocs or factions can emerge. The Parliament is dominated by "conservatives" and "principlists", a term usually applied to the political wave since the election of President Ahmadinejad in 2005.

Good link but NOT FOR BEGINNERS. If you are not familiar with the political structure of Iran, this is highly misleading.

3 March 2012 Last updated at 11:13 ET Friday's elections to the Iranian parliament are the first nationally since the 2009 protests Iran's interior minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar has said that initial figures show turnout in Friday's parliamentary elections was 64%.

Too bad the 64% turnout rate (as reported by the government) is probably inaccurate and completely fabricated
  •
possible. but why so sure about it? how would you know? how would any of us know?
  •
Of course you could say that, but let's be realistic here. It's a well-established fact that the 09 election was fraudulent and that polling data was fabricated.
  •
I do not believe a single word said by the officials of that regime.
  •
I am not disagreeing but I just like to push people to question their beliefs and where they come from. In other words, acknowledge the 0.00001% chance that the elections were not fabricated and consider what that would actually mean.
  •
I agree with you! It's always good to play devil's advocate and challenge what people say.
